Vi är i landskapet med den förtrollande naturen, i landskapet Alpes-Maritimes. Där kusten övergår i Italien. Å ena sidan är det ett Alplandskap med många medeltida bergsbyar. Å andra sidan är det ett lockande kustlandskap. Landskapet är beläget längs kusten mellan Cannes och Menton, som är det egentliga Côte d’Azure. Nice är och har alltid varit, sedan romartiden, den självklara centralorten i regionen.

I norr reser sig de södra Alperna, med bergstoppar på upp till tre tusen meters höjd. Det har alltid varit ett djupt religiöst och kulturellt folkslag som i alla tider har bebott dessa otillgängliga byar. Parallellt i samma landskap, ligger världsmetropoler som Cannes, Nice, Antibes. Där de bor, the Jet sets och de nyrika. Och i de medeltida byarna levdes livet i en sakta puls. Det är en spännande mixture. I byarna tycktes tiden stå still och i metropolerna upplevdes tiden i en ständig rörelse, tous le monde – tous les temps.

Om man beger sig från Nice, lämnar man Centre-Ville längs Promenad des Anglais, västerut. Vid floden Var svänger vi norrut, mot Digne och följer floden fram till Plan du Var. Den ringlande bergsvägen följer vi längs floden Vesuibe i 13 km. Nu är landskapet villt, vattnet kastas över klippor och stup. Den gula Ginsten och de gröna Cypresserna syns överallt. Liksom bergets tegelröda och himlens blekblåa. Vid Saint Jean la Riviere, stannar vi och pustar.

Den bågformade smala bron över floden, tar oss fram till serpentinvägen. Vi slingrar upp längs de nio hårnålsböjarna. Fikon, fortfarande Ginst och låg vegetation överallt. Nu är vi framme.
Byporten passeras och här är place l’Eglise, med de boulespelande herrarna och kuttrande duvorna. En katt springer över torget. Den medeltida byn lägrar lugnet och stillheten. Ibland hörs kyrkklockorna

Utelle, är en liten bergsby (la plus petite village) som ligger på en bergstopp i denna trakt. Det är en mycket liten pittoresk by, som på något sätt har stannat upp i sin utveckling. Efter den ringlande serpentinvägen som slingrar sig i nio kilometer upp från en dalgång, i lika många hårnålskurvor, är vi framme i byn. För att nå fram till byns torg måste vi gå in genom en portal. Vi lämnar nu det moderna samhället bakom oss, och möts av den stilla andaktsfulla tystnaden och kliver in över kullerstenarna, invid den medeltida kyrkan som reser sig som en väldig katedral vid det lilla torget.
Duvorna kuttrar i solen och katterna slinker in i den skyddande skuggan.

Miracle de Madone d’Utelle
”Omkring år 860 seglade ett skepp med några spanska sjömän längs den provencalska kusten. Plötsligt drabbades de av en fruktansvärd storm, helt nära flodmynningen till floden Var. De var nära att dö, och de lovade Gud att skapa en helig plats,som de ville dedicera jungfru Maria, om de klarade sig ur stormens grepp och överlevde.
Medan de bad, framträder så himlens drottning, som visar dem ett berg i ljus, som belyser alla dalar och berg i regionen. Himlen var åter fridfull och rofylld och denna stillhet blev snart utspridd överallt runtomkring. Stormen upphörde och slutade med ens. Den mäktiga guds moder, hade svarat på deras bön på ett mirakulöst vis. Sjömännen höll sitt löfte. De begav sig till berget som jungfru Maria, den gudomliga, hade visat dem, och här byggde de ett första litet kapell till minne av detta mirakel.
Dessa tre spanjorer var bröder, bröderna Olivarez, och de bosatte sig här; en av bröderna bosatte sig i byn Utelle, en annan i la Tour sur Tinée och den tredje i byn Figaret. Namnet ”Olivari” minner från dessa bröder och sjömän. Kapellet vid Madone d’Utell utvidgades efter hand, och förbättrades. En kyrka restes snart. Prästerskapet och den officiella myndigheten i Utelle, organiserade också viktiga pilgrimsfärder till Madone d’Utelle. Biskopar från Rom och Nice uppmuntrade också till denna fromhet.
År 1510, begav sig en ämbetsmans dotter från Sospel, som både var döv och stum, till Madone d’Utelle, och vid det gamla kapellet blev hon kurerad från sina handikapp. Senare, blev greven av Tende, Georges Lascaris, kurerad från en långvarig sjukdom, efter att ha avlagt det heliga löftet, och vandrat till den heliga platsen i Utelle. Den heliga platsen, med kloster och kapell förstördes av olika krig. Under den franska revolutionen blev den heliga platsen totalt förstörd. Efter alla dessa fruktansvärda händelser, hjälpte bergsbefolkningen till att rekonstruera och bygga upp den heliga platsens kapell och kloster. Människor från byarna kom för att tillsammans bygga upp helgedomen, och de hade gåvor med sig från när och fjärran; Materialet fraktades längs serpentinvägarna, på människors skuldror, och på åsnors ryggar.
Människor från byn Belvedere forslade hit skifferplattor till tak, och det heliga vattnets bassäng. Byn Figaret gav virke och flottan, Saint Martin du Var, gav tegel, Reveston och Figaret gav bygget murbruk, och slutligen byarna Clans och Marie, levererade och anskaffade också olika materiel till färdigställandet av den heliga platsen. Omkring år 1830 byggde Jean Andre Cristini från Figaret, en skyddande mur omkring kapellet.
Statyn som är rest för vår Madone d’Utelle, byggdes av mångfärgade träslag under 1700-talet. Denna staty som kröntes den 27 juni år 1938 av Hans Höghet och Heligaste Grace Valerio Valeri, inför en församling av 30 000 människor, som vandrat till denna heliga plats.”

Vi startar i Nice, och lämnar så Centre-Ville i morgonbrisen. Vi tar oss ner mot La Mer, och åker förbi alla hotell och casino. Vi åker längs Promenad des Anglais, västerut några kilometer. Stopp vid floden Var. Här svänger vi norrut, mot Digne och Grenoble.Vi följer floden fram till byn Plan du Var. Vi fläktar oss i solen och ser skådespelet, den forsande floden, de röda klipporna, solen och den gula ginsten. Den ringlande bergsvägen österut följer vi längs floden Vesuibe i tretton kilometer. Nu är landskapet villt, vattnet kastas över klippor och stup. Den gula ginsten och de gröna cypresser syns överallt. Bergets tegelröda färg så påtaglig och himlens blekblåa.
